Maintaining A Work-Life Balance in 3 Easy Steps

Life becomes a routine and as we get older, we are always “on-the-go”. Work becomes more stressful, life at home is forever demanding and life itself never stops for anyone. In today’s fast paced society, it becomes challenging to pause for a quick moment and enjoy the priceless things life has to offer. It is unfortunate that it’s usually only when something drastic in our lives happens that we realise we stopped enjoying the little things in life that truly matter.

After having lost the life of a parent, working 60-70 hours a week, and having absolutely no social life, I had an epiphany. I woke up one morning thinking to myself, “What am I doing? What am I waiting for? Is this what I have to look forward to for the rest of my life?” I recall looking at myself in the mirror and saying “its time for a change”.

It is unfortunate that it’s usually only when something drastic in our lives happens that we realise we stopped enjoying the little things in life that truly matter.

I implemented change by following the three easy steps of setting goals and priorities, embracing the off button, and promoting a healthy lifestyle. As you may know, it takes 21 days to form a habit.

My advice for you – start today.

  • Set Goals and Priorities: Be honest with yourself and determine what is really important. Distinguish between work, family and “alone time”. Would you rather stay extra hours at work rather than heading out on time to make it home for dinner, a friend’s birthday party or your nephew’s football game? It is understandable that work can become burdensome and there will be times that staying late working on a project might be more important. However, do not allow this to become a routine. It’s all about having balance. For example, instead of canceling dinner plans, reschedule and hold yourself accountable to make sure you follow through.
  • Embrace the “Off Button”: Out of the 1440 minutes a day has, take just 3 minutes out of your entire day and devote it to a moment of silence. In today’s society, the high demand on social media makes this step more difficult. Is it absolutely necessary to respond to that email at 1:00am? Can you have lunch without having to look through your Facebook or Instagram feed? Shut off any external stimuli and embrace silence. I promise that your mind is in dire need of it and will greatly appreciate it.
  • Promote a healthy lifestyle: A healthier lifestyle promotes a healthier body and mind. All of a sudden, you will become more productive. This involves better eating habits, leisure walking or running; and any sport or outdoor activity will help you reach inner balance.

Having a healthy balance with work, family, friends and alone time are all important. Once you obtain a balance, life becomes enjoyable. The most important aspect to remember is “Never get so busy making a living, that you forget to make a life”. Start today!
